Slack says the file is no longer available in 2026
People search Slack file deleted when a link in an old thread opens onto nothing. Slack's free-workspace help says you can view files from the last 90 days. Files more than a year old are permanently deleted. The conversation is still there. The delivery is not.
Slack says the file is no longer available when a free workspace has moved on. Slack's help for free workspaces says you can view messages and files from the last 90 days. When the workspace hits that limit, older messages and files are hidden. Data more than one year old is permanently deleted. The thread still reads like a delivery. The download does not.
Spike does not restore a Slack file that is gone. If you still have the original, put it in a folder and paste a new URL in the thread. Slack can stay the conversation. The file should not depend on a 90-day view.
90 days, then a year
Slack is blunt on the free plan. Search only reaches the last 90 days of messages and files. Files, in their words, include clips, PDFs, documents, images, screenshots, and audio and video. Hidden is not the same as deleted. Their feature-limits page says upgrading reveals messages and files beyond the 90-day line. A year is the harder cut: they permanently delete free-workspace data older than that. If the client asks in month thirteen, upgrade will not raise it.
- Free: 90 days of visible files and messages.
- Past a year on Free: permanently deleted.
- Paid plans: Slack's file-sharing page says access to uploaded files is not limited to 90 days.
- Upload size is a different number. The add-files page says up to 1 GB, on all plans, up to 10 files in one message.
1 GB is not why the link died
A file that never posted was over 1 GB, or it was blocked. A file that posted in March and fails in August was the calendar. Do not compress a master to satisfy a limit you already cleared. The next failure is retention. How to send files over 50MB is the size wall in email and Discord, which stops far below Slack's 1 GB.
Send the file so the thread can forget it
Keep the original outside Slack
If Slack is the only copy, the 90-day view is also the archive. That is the mistake.
Put the delivery in one folder
The PDF, the stills, the WAV. Name them. Spike does not compress the download.
Copy a link that matches the job
Free is 2 GB and a 1-year link. Pro or Business if the pack is large or must stay up with no link expiry.
Paste the URL in Slack
The message can age out. Say in the thread that the page is the file, not the Slack attachment.
Slack is the room. It is a bad vault on the free plan.
The client is not in your workspace
A Slack Connect thread still dies with the retention rules of the workspace that holds the file. A guest who could see it in week two cannot see it in week fourteen. They should not need a Slack seat to fetch a pack you already finished. How to share files with clients. If the same people live in Teams and the attach failed there, that ceiling is 100 MB. Teams says the file is too large.
When Slack should keep the file
- You are on a paid plan and the file should live in the channel.
- It is a screenshot or a note from this week, not a delivery.
- The whole team edits around that Slack file on purpose.
Dual-run is the honest split. Slack for the talk. A folder for the file that has to survive the 90 days. A WeTransfer in the same thread can still expire in three days. This transfer has expired.
The thread can forget. The file should not.
Slack says the file is no longer available in 2026 because a free workspace only shows 90 days, and deletes what is older than a year. Do not treat the channel as the archive. If you still have the pack, put it on a page and paste that URL. What Spike is is the file that outlives the thread.
