How many subscribers to make money on YouTube

How many subscribers to make money on YouTube depends on the till. Ad and Premium revenue share needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. Fan funding can open earlier, at 500. A priced folder in the description has no subscriber gate from Spike.

People type how many subscribers to make money on YouTube because the Partner Program made a number famous. 1,000 is the ad door. It is not the only till on a video. YouTube still hosts the lesson. You still need original work, a country where YPP exists, no active Community Guidelines strikes, and a review. The leftover job, if you already get "where are the files", is a description link that can take payment before AdSense does.

This page answers the official counts, then the file sale that does not wait on them. Sell on YouTube is the description playbook. What Spike is is the folder. YouTube's own Help Center is the source for Partner Program rules. Those rules move. Check Studio if you are applying this month.

How many subscribers to make money on YouTube ads

For a share of watch-page ads and YouTube Premium revenue, YouTube's current Partner Program entry is 1,000 subscribers and one of two performance routes: 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form video in the last 12 months, or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. You need the subscriber count and one route. You do not need both 4,000 hours and 10 million Shorts views.

Qualified watch hours are public long-form views. Private, unlisted, and deleted videos do not count. Shorts in the Shorts Feed do not count toward the 4,000-hour number. Livestreams that never become a public VOD do not count. YouTube is explicit about that split so people stop grinding Shorts and expecting the long-form hour meter to move.

  • Live in a country where the Partner Program is available.
  • Be 18, or have a legal guardian who can take AdSense payouts.
  • Turn on 2-Step Verification. Have advanced features access.
  • Link or create an AdSense for YouTube account in Studio, not a random AdSense from years ago if YouTube tells you to start in Studio.
  • Follow channel monetization policies. No active Community Guidelines strikes when you apply.

Hitting 1,000 does not mint money that afternoon. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole. Review often takes about a month and can run longer. If the first try fails, the Help Center describes appeal windows and wait periods before you re-apply. Ads can still appear on videos before you are in YPP. In that case you are not yet eligible for a share. That is YouTube's rule, not a Spike claim.

500 for fan funding, 1,000 for ads, 0 subscriber gate on a priced Spike folder.

The 500-subscriber door is not ads

YouTube also runs an earlier-access path into fan funding: channel memberships, Super Thanks, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and related tools, depending on country. The public floor is 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Age, Made for Kids limits, and extra module terms still apply. This is not a share of watch-page ads.

Shopping features that put other brands on your channel sit higher still (YouTube has used 10,000 subscribers for some shopping products). Treat that as a separate job. A LUT under a colour tutorial is not a store shelf.

What YouTube has said changes in 2027

In 2026 YouTube announced that from 1 February 2027, new applicants for ads and Premium revenue share will need 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Existing YPP members are not knocked out by that entry change. Fan-funding thresholds are described as unchanged. Shorts ad share is getting its own ongoing view floor. None of that is a reason to invent RPM maths. It is a reason to have a till that is not only AdSense.

Where waiting on 1,000 becomes limiting

  • The comments already say "link to the project" and you answer with a transfer that dies.
  • A 400-subscriber channel teaches a real skill. Ads are closed. The files are ready.
  • You hit 1,000 and still wait a month in review.
  • A membership perk for a one-off ZIP trains people to pledge, grab the file, and cancel.
  • The video will rank next year. A three-day drop will not.
The hour meter can still be climbing while line one of the description sells the pack.

How to make money on YouTube before 1,000 subscribers

You make money from YouTube viewers when they pay you, not only when YouTube pays you. Affiliates, freelance from the comments, live teaching, and digital files all sit outside AdSense. Spike is the file version: a folder, a treated preview, checkout on that URL. There is no 1,000-subscriber application. There is still a need for people who watched and wanted the pack. A quiet channel will not print money because the link exists.

Put the project, the LUT, the worksheet, the stems in one folder. Show a sample that matches a frame from the video. Price it in GBP. Minimum paid price is £1. Entire folder if the pack is the product. Individual files if they should tick. Paid download links is the object. Charge for a download link is the switch.

Watch the lesson. Line one is the Spike URL. A treated preview, then payment unlocks the files.

Use a priced description link when at least one of these is true. Keep waiting on YPP-only when none of them are, and the videos were never meant to ship a pack.

  • Viewers already ask for the project file, the preset, or the worksheet.
  • You are under 1,000, or you are in review, and the pack is finished.
  • The product is this video's files, not a monthly club.
  • The video should still convert next year from the same URL.

Ads vs memberships vs a paid folder

Three tills, three jobs. Mixing them is how a one-off LUT becomes a cancelled membership and a comment that the download vanished.

Keep YouTube for watch time. Use memberships for belonging. Use a Spike folder for this pack.

A monthly membership is belonging. A priced folder is this tutorial's files.

Replace waiting on 1,000 with a Spike workflow

An editor finishes a colour tutorial. The old sequence is: hint at the LUT, say "once we hit 1,000", maybe drop a WeTransfer that dies, then wait. The Spike sequence is the same video plus a door.

  1. Teach without giving the files away

Show the result. Name the pack. Do not paste the .cube in a comment.

  2. Put those files in one folder

Match a frame on the unpaid view. Price the share. Get paid before sending files.

  3. Paste the URL as line one

Description first. A pinned comment if you want. Do not bury it under fifty affiliate codes.

  4. Leave the door up

Pro or Business if the video should keep converting. Free shares last three days. Apply for YPP when the meter allows. You do not take the pack down to turn ads on.

Same tutorial. Wait on 1,000, or sell the project file from the description tonight.

Spike takes 5% on Free, 1% on Pro, 0% on Business, from the payout. Stripe's card fee still applies. Buyers pay the number you typed, in pounds. On Pro and Business you can put a YouTube handle on the folder page so the jump from watch still looks like the channel.

A subscriber count is a gate YouTube owns. A folder URL is an address you own. The video will still teach in 2028. The same spike.zip/f/… can still open. That is the difference between making money on YouTube only when ads unlock, and keeping digital file delivery as a place under every upload that names the pack. Shorts can point at the same folder as the long video. Sell on TikTok if the short lives there too.

Keep the watch on YouTube. Apply for ads when you hit the count. The description can already sell the pack.

Who this is for under 1,000, and after

Educators and tutorial channels

The watch is free. The PDF and the exercises are the product. Educators and how educators sell course files are that week. Do not wait on ads to ship the worksheet.

Colourists, photographers, designers

A grade on camera, a .cube in the folder. A speed art, the Figma or PSD behind checkout. Sell Lightroom presets and LUTs. Designers.

Filmmakers and musicians

A breakdown pack under the video. A session under a walkthrough. Filmmakers. Musicians. Creators who already drop exclusives can use the same URL in a Community post. How creators sell exclusive drops.

1,000 subscribers answers when YouTube will split ad money with you. A description folder answers whether they can buy the files tonight.

How many subscribers to make money on YouTube is 1,000 for ads, 500 for fan funding, and none for a file sale you already know they want. Keep YouTube. Apply when the meter says so. When the set is a pack, put it in a folder, treat the preview, and leave a door under the video. What Spike is is that library: the lesson stays on YouTube, the checkout sits on the same URL the comments can still open next year.

Questions

Good to know

1,000, plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. YouTube still reviews the channel. Meeting the number is not an automatic accept. Shorts watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold.
