Watermark files and sell the clean copies
A watermark is a claim of ownership on the unpaid view. Selling the clean copy on that same URL means you never email "the version without the logo" as a separate drop. The mark is the window. Checkout is the till.
Watermark files and sell is how stock sites taught everyone to preview. The extra you want as a studio is that the marked view and the clean download live on one folder link, with checkout in between. You are not exporting "gallery_WM.jpg" and "gallery_print.jpg" as two emails.
On Spike the unpaid share can carry a watermark. Payment unlocks the originals. That sits beside blur images and sell: mark when you want the picture readable, blur when a clean still would replace the buy. The combined how-to is blur and watermark previews.
A mark that actually does work
A 12-pixel logo in the corner is a courtesy, not protection. Put the mark where a crop would ruin the shot, or repeat it. Clients can still choose a favourite. They cannot hang a clean print from the unpaid page. If they complain they "cannot see the photo," the mark is too heavy. If they can print it, it is too light.
Not only photos
- Client galleries: watermark the unpaid stills, sell the print set.
- Illustrations and comics: a readable mark on the preview, layered files behind pay.
- Lookbooks and decks: sample pages instead of a full unmarked PDF.
- Preset packs: a before-and-after with your name, ZIP after checkout. See Lightroom presets.
Watermark, then sell, without two packs
Store the clean masters
If you watermark the file on disk and upload that, the buyer gets the mark. Upload clean. Let the share treat the preview.
Set the unpaid view
Watermark, blur, or both. Check a screenshot. If the screenshot is the product, you are not done.
Put a price on the folder
Sell the folder or charge for the download link. Password it for a named client.
Storefront samples vs client pages
A public sample you want Google to see can be watermarked and left open. A client gallery should be passworded as well. Do not rank a page you also need to keep private. Journal articles and public packs are for discovery. Named deliveries are for the recipient. Censor files and sell covers the privacy-plus-pay case.
The watermark is a sentence: this still belongs to someone. Payment is the next sentence.
If the product is a logo pack rather than a gallery, the mark on the preview can be a simple lockup on a fake poster, not a diagonal across every file. That sell is sell logo files online.
Re-downloads after the wedding season are where a library earns itself. They lost the ZIP. You point at the same URL. You do not rebuild a transfer because the watermarked preview and the clean set were never two products.
Questions
Good to know
A tiny corner logo is easy to crop. A stronger diagonal or a repeated mark makes the unpaid file obviously not the deliverable. Readable enough to judge. Useless enough to charge.
