How to sell a ZIP file online

A ZIP is how most digital products already travel: presets, fonts, stems, a course. Selling it should not mean a Shopify theme. It should mean a sample, a price, and the archive on the same URL.

How to sell a ZIP file online is a search people make after they have already zipped the product. They do not want a course on SKUs. They want the archive to have a price and a page. Spike can be that page.

Drop the ZIP in a folder. Add a sample if a black archive icon will not sell itself. Turn selling on. Send the link. Payment is what lets them take the file. You are not emailing the ZIP after a bank notification.

The ZIP stays closed on the unpaid view. Checkout pulls it open on the same link.

When a ZIP is the right product

ZIP when the buyer expects one blob: a font family, a Lightroom pack, a stem pack, a lesson. Keep loose files when they will pick a subset, or when you will swap one JPEG later. Selling a folder covers the loose case. This page is the archive case.

What to put beside the ZIP

  • A cover or before-and-after the unpaid view can show.
  • A plain-text file list so people know they are not buying a mystery.
  • Install notes for presets, fonts, or templates.
  • The license, inside the ZIP, not only in a caption.

Preview without giving the archive away

An unpaid download of pack.zip is the sale. Show a sample instead. For looks, censor or blur. For audio, a tagged preview. For a course, a one-page PDF. The ZIP itself waits on checkout.

  1. Build the archive as you would email it

Sane names. No nested junk. A readme at the top level.

  2. Upload to Spike and price the folder

Charge for a download link if you want the switch spelled out. Minimum £1.

  3. Replace in place when you ship v2

Buyers who already paid can still use the URL if you leave the share on. Say so in the listing copy.

Price, fees, and keeping the file

You type the price. Spike takes 5%, 1%, or 0% from the payout on Free, Pro, or Business. Stripe's card fee still applies. The ZIP stays in your library. Free share links last three days; Pro and Business until you turn them off. Free-plan files also follow 30-day retention.

If the product is already a ZIP, the shop can be a link.

Preset sellers can start with how to sell Lightroom presets. PDF and template packs live in selling PDFs and templates.

If you sell the same ZIP every week, pin the URL on the profile that already sends the traffic. You are not depending on a marketplace search rank that moves. You can still list the pack elsewhere for discovery. Spike is the extra for people who already want it: story, newsletter, DM.

A ZIP that contains a virus scanner note and a license is easier to support than a ZIP that contains only binaries. Buyers who cannot open the archive will write to you. A one-line readme that says "macOS: double-click; Windows: right-click Extract" cuts that in half. Put it inside the archive, not only on the page.

Versioning is where a folder beats a single emailed blob. When you ship v2, replace the ZIP in place if everyone should get the new pack, or keep v1 as its own folder if people still buy it. Say which you do in the listing copy so support is not a surprise.

Questions

Good to know

Either. A ZIP is simple for the buyer: one download. Loose files in a Spike folder are easier for you to replace one asset later. Both can be priced.
