How to sell PDFs, ebooks, and templates with a link
Most digital goods are still files: a PDF, a Notion export, a Figma kit, a slide deck, a ZIP of templates. You do not need a storefront theme to sell them. You need a page that shows the contents, takes payment, and hands over the package.
A clothing brand needs a shop: variants, shipping, merchandising. An ebook is a file. A template pack is a file. The buyer wants to know what is inside, pay, and get a ZIP. Spike is the extra that a full shop does not have to provide: a sample, a price, and the download on one link.
Digital goods that are just files
- Ebooks and paid newsletters as PDF.
- Curriculum, worksheets, and cohort packs.
- Design templates, fonts, and UI kits.
- Spreadsheets, Notion dumps, slide templates.
- Preset packs and LUT sets.
If it zips, it can live in a folder. If it lives in a folder, it can have a paid download link.
Why a full shop is often more shop than delivery
Shopify and similar tools are excellent at variants, shipping, and merchandising. For a 12 MB PDF, Spike is the smaller surface: one folder, a sample, checkout, download. Marketplaces add discovery if you need strangers to find you. Use that when the sale does not already start on your list, your bio, or a call.
Use a shop when you are building a catalogue with traffic. Use a link when the conversation already happened and you need to sell the file without a project.
One folder, one price, one unlock
Package the deliverable
PDF plus license, or ZIP plus a readme. Name the top-level files so the download makes sense a month later.
Show a sample, not the whole document
A cover, three pages, or images of the templates. The unpaid preview should answer "is this the thing" without being the thing.
Price the folder and share the URL
Checkout and download stay on that page. You can put the same product on a storefront later without re-packaging.
The shop for a PDF is a link that does not lie about what is inside, and does not give it away.
Previews for documents
Documents do not watermark like photos. Your preview is editorial: which pages you are willing to show. Put samples in the folder as separate files if you want the rest locked, or rely on a protected preview where the product supports it. Never use the full ebook as the teaser.
For visual packs, treat cover images like a photo preview: marked or reduced, with the layered files behind payment.
Licensing notes
Say what the buyer can do. Personal vs commercial. Can they redistribute. Can a student cohort share a login (usually no). A short PDF in the folder beats a buried FAQ. If you sell more than one license tier, use two folders or two products rather than a paragraph nobody reads at checkout.
When you want the sharing model without a price, the companion piece is how to share large files securely.
Questions
Good to know
Show a sample: the cover, a contents page, a chapter, or screenshots in the folder. Keep the full document locked until checkout. Do not serve the entire PDF as the unpaid preview.
