Outlook says the attachment is too large in 2026
People search Outlook attachment too large when the send button dies on a paperclip. Microsoft does not publish one number for every Outlook. The desktop troubleshooter says internet accounts default to 20 MB. Outlook.com's sending-limits page says 25 MB. The pack still does not belong in the message.
Outlook says the attachment is too large when the paperclip is bigger than that mailbox will carry. In 2026 the error is still "the attachment size exceeds the allowable limit," or a plain too-large note, depending on the app. Microsoft's own pages do not agree on one megabyte. Treat the number as a property of the account, not a law of files.
Spike keeps Outlook as the letter and the folder as the pack. Paste a URL where the attachment would have been. They open a page. They do not need a Microsoft login. Spike does not compress the download. The file you upload is the file they take.
Three Outlooks, three ceilings
Microsoft Learn says Outlook 2013 and later, for an internet email account, defaults to 20 MB (20,480 KB). That total covers one big file or several smaller ones added together. The point of the limit, in their words, is to stop the computer uploading attachments most providers will reject.
Outlook.com is a different page. Microsoft's sending-limits article says the attachment size limit is 25 MB. The same company's reduce-size article says internet accounts such as Outlook.com or Gmail are limited to 20 MB, and that the figure includes the message as well as the files. If your send failed, believe the error on your screen, not a single number from a blog. Both official pages are telling you the paperclip is the wrong disk.
- Outlook desktop, internet account: Microsoft Learn says 20 MB total attachments by default.
- Outlook.com: the sending-limits page says 25 MB.
- Exchange or work mail: the admin's limit. Microsoft's reduce-size page says the Exchange default is 10 MB.
- A registry tweak on a PC can raise the desktop number. It cannot raise the server that will still bounce the message.
A OneDrive link is still a Microsoft door
Outlook.com says you can share from OneDrive instead. Those links do not count toward the email size, and Microsoft says the linked file can be up to 2 GB. Useful when both of you already live in Microsoft 365. Weak when the client has no work account, the file is Restricted, or the gallery sits in the same Drive as last year's jobs. Google Drive You need access is the cousin screen on another logo. A page they can open without requesting access is the send.
Zipping is a different job
Microsoft suggests compressing when a file is near the line. A zip can pull a stack of documents under 20 MB. It will not turn a 4 GB shoot into an attachment. Do not crush a master until Outlook accepts it and call that delivery. How to send large video files.
Match the mailbox to the file. A paperclip is not a library.
Send the pack from the same email
Take the files off the paperclip
Leave the message. The sentence can stay. The ZIP cannot.
Put the deliverable in one folder
Name the files. A short clip or a treated still if looking would be taking.
Copy a link that fits the plan
Free storage is 2 GB. Pro is £8 a month at 500 GB. Business goes up to 10 TB.
Paste the URL in Outlook
Not a second attachment. Not a Drive they cannot open. One page.
When to stay inside Outlook anyway
- The file is under the ceiling and they only need it once.
- Both of you already work in that Exchange mailbox.
- A zip of documents actually fits, and you checked the size before sending.
Dual-run is normal. Outlook for the letter. A folder for the file that did not fit. If Gmail is the other inbox, its personal attachment limit is 25 MB. How to send files over 25MB. If the fallback was a transfer that then died, WeTransfer says this transfer has expired.
The message can announce the pack. It should not be the pack.
Outlook says the attachment is too large in 2026 because that account's ceiling is 20 MB, 25 MB, or whatever Exchange set. Do not argue with the paperclip. Put the files on a page and paste that URL. What Spike is is that send. Outlook stays the letter.
Questions
Good to know
It depends which Outlook. Microsoft's troubleshooter says Outlook 2013 and later defaults to 20 MB total for internet accounts (POP, IMAP, HTTP), whether that is one file or several. Outlook.com's sending-limits page says the attachment limit is 25 MB. Exchange uses the limit your organisation set. A reduce-size page on Microsoft's site says that Exchange default is 10 MB.
